A wonderful trip to the Comoros, exploring birds and nature.
BELOW IS OUR PLANNED ITINERARY FOR THE GRAND ORNITHOLOGICAL CIRCUIT - 10 DAYS / 3 ISLANDS
Day 1: Arrival in Moroni, on the island of Grande Comore.
Upon arrival at Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport (Hahaya), our local team will greet you with a warm smile. You will then be transferred to the Retaj Moroni Hotel to settle in and relax after your journey. At the end of the day, we will take some time to discuss the program: exploring the islands, identifying the target species, and the schedule for the coming days. At the Retaj Moroni Hotel, you will enjoy a full night's stay, with breakfast included.
Day 2: We will venture together to discover Mount Karthala.
Together, we set off to explore Mount Karthala, an impressive and pristine natural setting. The journey begins in a 4x4, then we continue on foot through magnificent mountain forests, where we can observe species unique to this island. After this wonderful adventure, we descend peacefully to the Jardin de la Paix ecolodge, a tranquil place where we can relax and recharge. Breakfast and lunch are included.
Day 3: A stroll between the coastal sites and the forests of Grande Comore
We begin our day in Salimani, a peaceful and pleasant spot for birdwatching. With a bit of luck, we'll have the opportunity to see the Comoro Drongo, the Comoro Sunbird, or the Comoro Blue Pigeon. Then, we'll take a walk in Iconi and around Lake Marabou, tranquil places where we can take the time to observe egrets, herons, and kingfishers. After this wonderful day, we'll return to the Jardin de la Paix ecolodge to relax.
Day 4: Journey from Grande Comore to Mohéli
After the transfer to the airport, we take a domestic flight to Mohéli, the wildest and best-preserved island in the archipelago. Upon arrival, we set off to explore the Miringoni site, a prime location for observing endemic forest species. At the end of the day, we settle in for the night at the Auberge Les Abou. After dinner, we head out at dusk in search of the elusive Mohéli Scops Owl. Breakfast and lunch are included.
Day 5: Mohéli, with its forests and marine park
We spent the whole day observing birds in Ziroudani and the Mohéli Marine Park. We could see seabirds, rare forest species and, if all went well, try a night outing to spot the Mohéli Scops Owl.
Day 6: Departure from Mohéli to Anjouan
Next stop: Anjouan. Upon arrival, we settle into the Hotel Johanna Livingstone and take some time to unwind. In the evening, we head out to listen for and search for the Anjouan Scops Owl, a rare bird found only on the island.
Day 7: We're off to explore the Moya forest in Anjouan
We spend the day in the heart of the Moya forest in Anjouan. We walk, observe the birds, and discover species found nowhere else. And if we're lucky, we might even spot Livingstone's fruit bat, one of the rarest bats in the world. In the evening, we return to the comfort of the Hotel Johanna Livingstone for the night.
Day 8: Return from Anjouan to Moroni
We return to Grande Comore, to Moroni. In the afternoon, we head out again to leisurely observe the birds, to make up for what we didn't have time to see at the beginning of our trip. In the evening, we relax at the Retaj Moroni Hotel for the night.
Day 9: We're enjoying Grande Comore one last time
For this last day, we're off to observe the birds in Kafouni and Chonodjou. It's the perfect time to complete the list of species and enjoy the beautiful landscapes of the Comoros one last time.
Day 10: Departure
Depending on the flight time, transfer to Moroni airport for the return flight.
“Hi Chris,Sorry for late reply - daily work devoured me immediately upon return from my vacation 🙂 Everything was perfect! Thanks a lot for organizing everything! We had too little time to explore the island in every detail and therefore we decided to come back again. Not next year, but maybe the year after. Additionally I would like to thank our driver. He is really a nice guy and helped us a lot during our stay. You are lucky to have him on board. Pls, send our best regards to him when you see him! We'll be in touch! And, by the way, Merry Christmas & a Happy New year!! 🙂 Dmitri & Nadia Sultanov, Russia,”
